Chapter Eleven

Nina was relieved to find the house empty when she got home from work. It wasn’t that she didn’t want to see Manny. She was excited about the evening ahead, but she wanted to shower and get changed. She was dirty and sweaty after a busy day in the gift store that had seen her crawling around in the storage room in the back twice looking for inventory that was logged as being there, but she’d be damned if she could find.

Before she’d left this afternoon, Ben had stopped in to ask if she’d mind covering again next week. She was grateful for the work—and even more grateful that he’d arranged someone to cover the evenings. She’d still have to go in at seven and open up, but she’d be able to leave at five. That still meant ten-hour days, but she needed the money, and she’d have her evenings free. Of course, she was hoping that she’d spend at least some of them with Manny.

She set her purse down on the counter in the kitchen and sat down for a minute. She should have stopped at the grocery store on the way home. She’d need to go back out again, but she had to take a shower first.

She dug for her phone when it rang, her heart racing. Her first thought was that it might be Manny saying that he couldn’t make it tonight after all, but no, that was just nerves. He was looking forward to this evening and she knew it. She frowned until her fingers closed around her phone. Perhaps it was Abbie wanting to come over. How could she turn her down if it were? She shook her head at herself. So much for trying to see the bright side. Why was she looking for the worst when it came to her evening ahead with Manny?

When she finally got a look at the display, she was relieved but surprised to see it was Janet calling. She hadn’t been in touch since the day Nina left Stanton.

“Hi, Janet,” she answered. “What’s up?”

“Hi, Nina. How are you?”

“I’m doing well, thanks. How about you?”

“Yeah. I’m fine. Listen, this … I don’t know how to tell you this.”

Nina frowned. “What? Just go ahead and say it whatever it is.”

Janet sighed. “I’m sorry. I …”

“Oh, just tell me already.” Nina surprised herself with the sharp edge to her voice, but she was a little irritated with Janet over the way things had gone. She didn’t have time for beating around the bush. She wanted to get off the phone and get ready for her evening.

“Okay. There’s no need to be like that. You need to know that Brian was in the store today.”

“Oh.” Nina sat back down heavily. She’d done well to put him completely out of her mind since she came home. She hadn’t wanted to think about what he’d done in the alley—or what he might have done if she hadn’t managed to get away—if those guys hadn’t been right there.
